THE STORY OF FRENCH AMERICA
A CONTINENT AT STAKE
Beginning
in the 1490s, Western European powers – England, Spain and France
– conquered, explored and claimed territories in the New World.
Three
centuries later, in the wake of the Age of Enlightenment, the English and
Spanish colonies of North America won their independence.
The
13 British Colonies became the United States of America! The northern part of
Nueva España
became the Estados unidos mexicanos, that is, México!
Nouvelle-France faced a different destiny.
Through
Franco-English conflicts and peace treaties, Louisiane was ceded to Spain,
then back to France and later purchased by the Americans. As a result, many
Cajuns and Creoles born in America lost the language of their ancestors.
Unlike Louisiane, French Acadie and Canada became British territories.
Despite this, Samuel de Champlain’s dream of a durable French presence
would go on in the St. Lawrence Valley, cradle of Canada and heart of
French-speaking America.
